Steve Isono, MD Covering the
2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing

February 23, 2022

Dr. Isono has been involved with Team USA and the Olympic Games for greater than 25 years. Most recently he served as the Head Team Physician for Team USA at the 2021 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo and is currently serving as the Head Team Physician at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. He has attended numerous Games over these many years including the Olympic Games, Pan American Games, World Championships in many different sports, and Youth Olympic Games. We asked Dr. Isono a few questions about his experience:

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST?:

The best part of working in the Olympics is working with a dedicated team of people who are involved with the total care of the athletes. There are people in operations, transportation, housing, dietary, organization, communication, and IT along with the medical team consisting of Physical Therapists, certified Massage Therapists, Athletic Trainers, Sports Psychologists, and Physicians, and ALL of these people are dedicated to the athletes.  Everyone understands that the Olympic Games are a “once in a lifetime event” and the sole reason we are all there is “to help the athlete to have a perfect performance at the perfect time."

WHAT IS A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE WORKING THE GAMES?:

The most memorable experience in working with the Olympics after all of these years, I would say that it is the distinct privilege to have the opportunity to represent our country with Team USA.  Being selected as the Head Team Physician is icing on the cake!
