Jessica Hooper, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Joint Replacement

Dr. Hooper is a board-certified, Stanford Adult Reconstruction fellowship-trained Orthopaedic surgeon, specializing in hip and knee joint replacement surgery. Dr. Hooper performs a full range of Orthopaedic procedures to treat injures and conditions related to hip and knee degenerative conditions, such as arthritis, avascular necrosis, and post-traumatic injuries. She is a past recipient of the AAHKS FARE grant for her work on the use of virtual reality as a teaching tool for residents learning total hip replacement. We are so excited to welcome Dr. Hooper back to the team!

Kenneth Lin, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Sports Medicine

Dr. Lin completed residency training at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, prior to completing the Stanford Orthopaedic Surgery Sports Medicine fellowship. He has a stong publication presence and is devoted to exceptional patient care. We are so pleased to have Dr. Lin returning to the team!

Earth?...or a 3D reconstructed uCT image?

Dr. Peter Yang and his research team had their 3D reconstructed uCT image selected as a cover in the journal of Tissue Engineering, Part A, September issue!

This 3D reconstructed uCT image shows their injectable biodegradable hydrogel aided robust bone formation in a circular critical size cranial defect in rodents. Its coincidental similarity to the Space view of Earth is a value-add to this already amazingly beautiful image!

What does digital health mean to you?

I think of it broadly to mean any way of making healthcare better by leveraging digital technologies. Simply put, it’s the use of commonly available digital devices to make healthcare better.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery continues to grow and excel in the area of Digital Health, an evolving and important use of technology to improve individuals’ health and wellness. Stanford’s remarkable leadership in this space is covered comprehensively in The Stanford Center for Digital Health Landscape Report. The Faculty Interviews section features key innovator Dr. Matthew Smuck, Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and recently appointed Professor! Dr. Smuck is also highlighted in the Center Outreach Initiative section of the report as key personnel in the recently launched NIH-funded Restore Center, and for his research lab, the Wearable Health Lab. The Wearable Health Lab harnesses the power of wearable biosensor data to span the gap between a qualitative approach toward a quantitative approach in research, prevention, and treatment of orthopedic and neurological disease. Congratulations to Dr. Smuck for his impressive research efforts and for his recent promotion!

"A" Grades for Patient Safety

Stanford Healthcare teams continue to work diligently to manage the difficulties of COVID-19 while keeping patient care and safety at the forefront.

On April 30, the Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health system, issued “A” grades to Stanford Health Care and Stanford Health Care – Valley Care for patient safety.

We are proud of our hospitals and teams, and will continue great efforts towards safety and patient care.

It is with great admiration and celebration that we congratulate Yunzhi Peter Yang, PhD, Stanford Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery in Materials Science and Engineering, and Bioengineerings, for being inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows Class of 2020. This honor is noted as one of highest professional distinctions accorded to a medical and biological engineer, as well as an opportunity to give back and make the fields of medical and biological engineering stronger through advocacy.

AIMBE is the authoritative voice and advocate for the value of medical and biological engineering to society, with a mission to recognize excellence, advance the public understanding, and accelerate medical and biological innovation. AIMBE welcomed a select 157 fellows across 34 countries into the this year’s fellows class, and Dr. Yang was nominated, reviewed, and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for “outstanding contributions in developing functionally graded biomaterials and bio-inspired vascularization approaches for musculoskeletal tissue engineering and translational biomedical research.”

Due to the current and unprecedented times, AIMBE cancelled the in-person annual meeting and induction ceremony scheduled for March 29-30, 2020. Thus, under special procedures, Dr. Yang was remotely inducted, along with 156 colleagues, comprising the 2020 AIMBE College of Fellows Class. We congratulate Dr. Yang and his colleagues on this amazing recognition!

Dr. Yang - "In 2010 I attended the AIMBE annual conference for the first time. I was presenting my research as a Coulter Foundation early career translational research awardee and traveling to Capitol Hill to advocate our biomedical research on behalf of AIMBE. Ten years later I myself have the honor to be inducted into the College of Fellows of AIMBE. Quite a journey!"

The PM&R Residents, along with a select few, were chosen as one of 230 international teams to participate in the Johns Hopkins Center for Bioengineering, Innovation, and Design (CBID) COVID-19 Design Challenge.

International Surgical Outreach

Stanford Making An Impact In Vietnam

In February 2020, Stanford Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon Dr. Robin Kamal, Orthopaedic Surgery Chief Resident Lauren Shapiro, associated faculty, & residents made their second visit to Hospital 175 in Ho Chi Minh City, where they rejoined surgeons and residents with whom they operated with and taught the last year.

Preparing to treat patients who traveled from all over Vietnam, the team spent their first day in indications clinic where they examined varied and complex cases. Subsequently, the next few days were spent in the operating rooms in the mornings and teaching, lecturing, and reviewing case presentations in the afternoons. The team primarily performed hand and upper extremity cases including distal radius fractures, both bone forearm fractures, distal humerus and humeral shaft fractures and malunions, distal radius mass biopsy, and an elbow instability case, in addition to a case involving multiple tendon transfers for a patient with a radial nerve injury following a motorbike accident. Overall, it was a great experience – learning and working in a different environment. Already looking forward to going back next year!

Dr. Kraus, Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford Children's Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center, shares her knowledge and passion for medicine, running, and injury prevention.  As a passionate physician, and an avid runner and cyclist, Dr. Kraus talks about her amazing journey to becoming a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sports Medicine and a competitive athlete, and her incredible dedicaiton to patient care. Dr. Amy Ladd, Chief of Hand & Upper Extremity, Chief of the Robert A Chase Hand Center & Professor, represents Hatshepsut, 5th Pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt.

"Tales from the Crypt," A talk about 3-D imaging of a 2000 year old mummy

In wonderful representation of the noble Hatshepsut, fifth Pharaoh of the eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt, Dr. Amy Ladd presented an insightful and incredibly educational talk about 3-D imaging of a 2000 year old mummy child to a substantial Stanford audience on Feb. 20, 2020. The imagery showed the layers of the human body, looking through the shroud of the perfectly preserved mummy. The images would show tissue, muscle, arteries, veins, ligaments, organs, and finally the skeletal system, and revealed some details on how the child lived and died.

Interested in Participating in a Study?

Dr. Constance Chu and her research team are looking for participants in their Acute ACL Trial.

In this study, Dr. Chu and her team will use an FDA-approved drug called tranexamic acid (TXA)—already widely used to reduce bleeding during orthopaedic surgeries—to see if TXA treatment right after ACL injury and during ACL surgery can improve knee recovery and cartilage health over 2 years of follow-up. This clinical trial is part of a $10 million grant led by Dr. Chu from the Department of Defense to combat the problem of osteoarthritis occurring after joint injuries.
